لقد أطنب الرحالة في وصف رحلاتهم إلى هذه البلاد، كما كثرت النقوش الدالة عليها.
لم يترك الكاتب جانباً من جوانب الحياة في فلسطين ولبنان وقرطاج إلا وذكره، واسترسل في كثير من الأحيان في وصفه، فضلاً عن إنطباعه تجاهه؛ كوصفه لأهل بيروت الذين يتخاطفون ثمار البطيخ القادم من يافا، وأطفالهم الذين يتخذون عمائم خضراء من قشوره الطافية على صفحة الماء، والنساء ذوات الجمال الأخاذ، وأسراب زيز الحصاد والحرباء تتجول في كسل على حافة النباتات الجافة، وأطلال في القدس حيثما وليت وجهك، وإحساس كئيب يمتلكك من أثر شعورك بأنك تتجول في مقبرة، والحياة في دمشق تتركز كلها في السوق، والأسواق هناك عامرة تعج بالبشر والبضائع والضجيج، ولعل أكثر ما يثير الإنتباه في أسواق دمشق هو وسامة الفتيان، وأهل دمشق دمثوا الأخلاق لينوا المعشر على وجه العموم، وحمامات دار الباي في قرطاج فيها أحجار سقاية كبيرة منحوتة وماء زلال، وزنجيات يضربن غسيلهن بالأرجل، وورشات طين بيضاء في كل مكان.
