يجمع هذا الكتاب خمسين قصيدة من الشعر الأميركي المعاصر، نقلها إلى العربية توفيق صايغ وتوزعت على ثلاث فئات رئيسية: أولاها، الشعراء الذين برزوا قبل الحرب العالمية الثانية لكنهم تابعوا الكتابة بعدها، فانتقى المترجم من شعرهم نتاج الفترة الأخيرة منها، وثانيتها، الشعراء الذين وطدوا مقامهم أثناء الحرب وكتبوا الكثير عنها وعن انطباعهم حولها، وثالثتها، الشعراء الشبان الذين دخلوا الحلبة بعد الحرب، سواء أكانوا من طائفة المغلوبين على أمرهم" - بتعبير المترجم - أم من الطائفة المعتدلة لذا، جاءت هذه المجموعة خالية من ذكر بعض مشاهير الشعراء المحدثين، كما جاءت خالية من ذكر الشعراء الآخرين، الذين ظلوا يكتبون، أو الذين برزوا أثناءها أو بعدها، أما من حيث اختيار المترجم القصائد، فقد اختار من كل شاعر أشهر قصائده، أو أفضلها، أو ما يراه أكثرها تمثيلاً لشعره، وأما من حيث يالترجمة للعربية، فهي ترجمة قريبة من الأصل الإنجليزي، أو بالأحرى الأميركي في بعض الأحيان، محاولاً أن تكون عربية، فأعطى بهذا الإشتغال توفيق صايغ القارئ العربي ما شاء الشاعر الأصلي أن يعطي قارئه.
وناءً على ما تقدم جمع هذا الكتاب نخبة من الشعراء الأمريكيين، وقد جرى التعريف بكل واحد منهم في بداية القسم الخاص به، ومن هؤلاء الشعراء نذكر: "والاس ستيفنز" ، "وليم كارلوس وليمز" ، "عزرا باوند" ، "هيلدا دو ليتل" ، "روبنسون جفرز" ، "ماريان مور" ، "جون كرو رانسوم" ، "ادوارد استلين كمينغز" ، "كنيث ركسروث" (...) وآخرون.
