تدور الرواية حول رجل الأعمال السويسري "برايزينج" الذي يسافر إلى تونس لقضاء إجازته، وهناك يقابل مجموعة من الشخصيات والأحداث التي أثَّرت في حياته فيما بعد بشكلٍ واضح. تهاجم الرواية نظرة الغرب المتطرفة للشرق، وهي أيضًا تهاجم سلبية الشرق في تجاوبه مع هذه النظرة. كما تجيب الرواية عن سؤال هام للغاية، من هم البربر؟ من هم الهمجيون؟
يقول يوناس لوشر في مقدمته التي كتبها للنسخة العربية: "هناك أمر أود أن أصرح به مُسبقًا: هذا الكتاب ليس كتابًا عن العالم العربي – كيف يتأتى ذلك؛ فالعالم العربي كبير للغاية ومتنوع بدرجة لا تسمح لكتاب واحد بتناوله – كما أنه ليس كتابًا عن شمال أفريقيا وليس عن تونس. بل هو كتاب يتناول نظرة غريبة للغاية وخاصةً عن تونس؛ نظرة السائح الأوروبي الثري الذي لم يعايش هذا البلد الغريب عنه سوى عبر ألواح الزجاج الداكن بأتوبيس الرحلات مكيف الهواء، أو من وراء الأسوار العالية لأحد المنتجعات السياحية الفاخرة؛ حيث لا ينبغي أن يظهر ما هو عربي إلا بوصفه شيئًا غريب الأطوار وعلى سبيل قِطَع الديكور للزينة، بينما يبقى الاتصال بالمواطنين التونسيين محدودًا، يقتصر على لقاءات عابرة وغير منتظمة مع عاملات النظافة بالفندق والجرسونات ومُلاك الفندق"، ويضيف المؤلف عن بطل روايته "برايزينج": "إن بطل حكايتي، رجل الأعمال السويسري "برايزينج"، يصر على لعب دور المراقب دائمًا حتى وإن كان شاهدًا على أحداث درامية. لا يتخذ قرارًا مرة واحدة، ولا يبادر بالفعل لمرة واحدة. ربما يكون هناك من ينتقد هذا الموقف تجاه العالم بوصفه موقفًا سويسريًّا صِرفًا. ويبدو لي كذلك أن هؤلاء "البرايزينج" موجودون في كل مكان، في كل المجتمعات. عدم الفعل هو موضوع هذا الكتاب، إنه أحد الأعراض المرضية لعصرنا هذا".
