هذا الكتاب من درر التراث العثماني وهو ترا إسلامي مكتوب باللغة التركية العثمانية وهي لغة أسهمت إسهاماً واضحاً في مسيرة التراث الإسلامي، ومعلوم أن التراث الإسلامي لا يقتصر على التراث المكتوبة باللغة العربية فحسب، ومصنف هذا الكتاب هو أيوب صبري باشا، وهو مؤرخ عثماني توفي في استانبول عام 1890م ولما كان- يرحمه الله- قد تنقل في السلك العسكري حتى وصل إلى رتبة أميرلاي في البحرية العثمانية وأقام فترة طويلة بالحرمين الشريفين مكة والمدينة أتاح له ذلك أن يثري علمه ومشاهداته ورؤيته الشخصية ومعرفته الواسعة بالتاريخ الإسلامي، وبدا هذا واضحاً في تصنيفه لكتابه هذا المشهور جداً والذي يتفوق كثيراً على ما كتب في فنه في كل اللغات، وقد جاء هذا الكتاب موسوعة جامعة شاملة عن هذه البقعة الطيبة قلما توجد في كتاب واحد وبهذه الصورة الرائعة التي صنف الباشا بها كتابه.
قسم أيوب صبري باشا كتابه إلى ثلاثة مجلدات في خمسة أجزاء: (الأول: مرآة مكة في جزأين، الثاني: مرآة المدينة في جزأين أيضاً، الثالث: جزرة العرب في جزء واحد)، ويق الكتاب في 3000 صفحة تقريباً، من القطع الكبير. إن هذا المصنف الذي يعد- بحق- موسوعة علمية وثقافية بما حواه من المعارف والفنون والتاريخ والقصص والشعر والإحصاءات قد استغرق تأليفه سبعة عشر عاماً فقد قام المؤلف بتنقيح مادة كتابه، وانتقاها جيداً إذ إنه بجانب اعتماده على المصادر والمراجع كان يسأل الأحياء من الناس من كبار السن يستوثق لمادة كتابه.
