وإذا كان كتاب ((ولادة إله)) لـ جان بوتيرو الصادر يدرس آلية أخذ التوراة لتلك المفاهيم مركّزاً على ما يتعلق بالآلهة ومن ثمّ تطويرها عبر الأزمان ليتحول نهائياً إلى مسألة الإله الواحد، فإن هذا الكتاب ((أساطير التوراة الكبرى وتراث الشرق الأدنى القديم)) يأتي مكمّلاً في هذا المجال إذ أنه يركّز على المقارنة بين النصوص الأسطورية للشرق الأدنى القديم ونظيراتها الواردة في التوراة، مستخدماً:
1- تحليل نصوص التوراة واكتشاف البنية الأسطورية فيها.
2- تطبيق المفاهيم والسمات النظرية للأسطورة التي استخلصها علماء الميثولوجيا، على روايات التوراة.
3- إبراز أوجه المشابهة والتخالف بين روايات التوراة ونصوص الشرق الأدنى القديم من خلال مقارنة اتسمت بدرجة معقولة من الدقة وتحري الحياة، ثم محاولة اكتشاف النموذج الأصلي من بين التراثين.
