إن الحكم خلاصة تجربة عاشها صاحبها ومر بها، وقد أهتم شيوخ التصوف والتربية والتسليك بفن الحكم، لأنه يحدد للسالك معالم الطريق. ومن أشهر الحكم التى عرفناها ووصلت إلينا، حكم الإمام ابن عطاء الله السكندرى المتوفى عام 709 هجرية، وهى مشهورة ومتداولة بين كافة أبناء الطريق الصوفى على اختلاف مشاربه.
واليوم أقدم هذه الحكم القدسية لمولانا الإمام العلامة محمد بن عبد الكبير الكتانى الحسنى رضى الله عنه، صاغها مؤلفها رضى الله عنه بلسان المشاهدة، وكتبها بقلم القرب والدنو. تحتاج كل عبارة فيها إلى التأمل والتفكير، فهى نفثات من صاحب توجهات صادقة، ومن قلب عرف الله تعالى من مقام الإحسان فأقبل عليه طول حياته.
فهذة الحكم مدرسة ربانية محمدية، تكفل لكل سالك سبيل الرشاد المخرج من طرق الغى والبعاد، وهى مقربة من الرب الجليل، بحكم ما اشتملت عليه من وصف حال العارفين، وطرق الوصول إلى منازل القرب من حضرة الرب.
وقد قسمها مؤلفها قدس الله سره إلى ما يمكن أن نطلق عليه منازل ومقامات، تتنوع أذواقها ومشاهدها بتنوع طرق السلوك إلى المولى جل سلطانه، فالطرق إلى الله على أعداد أنفاس الخلائق كما يقولون، فقد وضع سيدى أبو الفيض قدس الله سره فى هذه الحكم منهاجاً متكاملاً يمكن أى سالك صادق من الأخذ به، والنهل من معينه، والرتع فى بساتينه.
