كان الجاحظ عالماً "بارزاً" ذا عناية وإلمام بمختلف العلوم من مثل: الكلام، والفلسفة، والمنطق، والأدب، والبلاغة، والنقد واللغة، وعلى الرغم من كثرة الدراسات التي تناولت آراء الجاحظ في جوانب مختلفة، بقي ما يزال نبعاً "متدفقاً" لم ينضب بعد، وعلى الدارس أن لا يصدّه إشتهار الكاتب بموضوعات معينة عن البحث في موضوعات آخر قد يكون للكاتب فيها آراء قيّمة انخفض صوتها وسط ضجيج الشهرة.
إن دراسة الجاحظ باحثاً "لغوياً" ليس أمراً "سهلاً"، لأن آراءه اللغوية مبثوثة في مطوّلاته، وعلى الدارس أن يكون يقظاً "في التقاط تلك الآراء وجمعها ومحاولة ربطها، من أجل تكوين صورة متكاملة يمكن من خلالها معرفة نظراته في موضوعات اللغة.
وقد اعتمدت على كتب الجاحظ في جميع آرائه اللغوية، ومنها: الحيوان، والبيان والتبيين، والبخلاء، والعثمانية، وكتاب البرصان والعرجان، فضلاً عن رسائله المختلفة، وأود هنا أن أشير إلى أنّي قد أبعدت عن هذه الدراسة الكتب المنسوبة إلى الجاحظ، خشية أن أضمّنها آراء تحسب على الجاحظ وهي ليست له، وهذه الكتب هي: 1-التاج في أخلاق الملوك: ويشمل على بعض الآراء التي تدور حول ما تؤديه الإشارة من دلالة، 2-المحاسن والأضداد: وفيه شرح لبعض المفردات اللغوية، 3-الدلائل والإعتبار: ويحتوي هذا الكتاب على آراء قيّمة تنفع في الدراسات الصوتية، 4-سلوة الحريف بمناظرة الربيع والخريف.
