"كان الماء يتدفق لا يدري إلى أين ولماذا. كان يجري في أيار مثل الآن تماماً. لقد تدفق من النهر الصغير شهر مايس إلى نهر كبير، ومن النهر الكبير إلى البحر ثم يصبح نجاراً ويتحول إلى مطر، وربما كان ينظر إليه رايا بوفتش الآن هو الماء نفسه تماماً... وبدا العالم كله والحياة كلها لرايا بوفتش شيئاً غير مفهوم ونكتة باردة... رفع ناظريه عن الماء ونظر إلى السماء فتذكر ثانية كيف أن القدر كان لطيفاً به صدقة في شخص امرأة مجهولة وتذكر أحلام الصيف وخيالاته، ومرت بباله زوجته كامرأة عاقر بصورة غير اعتيادية ويائسة وكئيبة، عندما عاد إلى كوخه، لم يجد أحداً من زملائه الضباط. أخبره المراسل أنهم قد ذهبوا إلى بيت الجنرال فونتر يابكين الذي أرسل الفارس في طلبهم... لمدة لحظة وجيزة تعنى في داخله شعور بالابتهاج إلا أنه سرعان ما انطفأ وآوى إلى فراشه، وتحدياً منه للقدر وكأنه أراد أن يغيظه، فلم يذهب إلى بيت الجنرال.
