في هذه الرواية يقدّم دوستويفسكي، وصفاً لنفس ومشاعر المقامر، وإنسياقه المحموم بحيث يصبح غير قادر على ترك لعبة القمار، إلا إذا انتهت اللعبة، أو خسر كل فلس في جيبه.
ولا يقدم دوستويفسكي "المقامر" كشخصيّة مذمومة، بل يصوّره بنوع من الإفتتان، أو نوع من السحر، أو الإنسياق غير الواعي، أو تحدّي الظروف.
يصوّر دوستويفسكي، كعادته في رواياته، أعماق مكنونات شخصياته، فألكسي إيفانوفتيش الذي يحب باولين القاسية والعاتية والغريبة، يخضع لها ولنزواتها ويقول: إن في المذلّة والسقوط لمتعة عظمى.
