محمود الأطرش المغربي، الذي ولد في القدس في كانون الأول/ديسمبر 1903 من أبوين عاملين هاجرا من الجزائر إلى فلسطين، هو شخصية شيوعية بارزة في فلسطين والمشرق العربي ودوائر الأممية الشيوعية، أو الكومنترن، في موسكو، في العشرينيات والثلاثينيات، وفي الجزائر، في الأربعينيات والخمسينيات والستينيات، من القرن العشرين.
تشتمل مذكراته على معلومات غنية عن نشأته وظروف عمله في يافا، وعن أوضاع فلسطين خلال الحرب العالمية الأولى، وانتسابه إلى الحزب الشيوعي الفلسطيني وسفره إلى موسكو للدراسة في "الجامعة الشيوعية لكادحي الشرق"، ودوره في المؤتمر الوطني السابع للحزب الشيوعي الفلسطيني الذي عُرف باسم "مؤتمر التعريب". كذلك تحتوي المذكرات على معلومات وفيرة، ونادرة ربما، عن أوضاع السجون في فلسطين في عهد الانتداب البريطاني، وعن مساهمة صاحبها في قيادة الحزب الشيوعي السوري – اللبناني ودوره في موسكو بعد انتخابه عضواً في اللجنة التنفيذية للكومنترن، وعن موقفه من جوزف ستالين ومن حملة "التطهير" التي نظمها داخل الحزب الشيوعي في الاتحاد السوفياتي، وعن اعتقاله في باريس وانتقاله من فرنسا إلى الجزائر.
كما يتضمن هذا الكتاب مقدمة طويلة عن نشأة الحزب الشيوعي الفلسطيني وتطوره وطبيعة العلاقات التي قامت بينه وبين مركز الحركة الشيوعية العالمية في موسكو، وكذلك خاتمة عن صدقية المذكرات كمصدر لكتابة تاريخ الحركة الشيوعية في فلسطين.
