موضوع هذا الكتاب أهل القلم ودورهم في الحياة الثقافية في مدينة دمشق بين عامي 1172-1120هـ/1758-1708م، وهي الفترة التي شهدت المرحلة الأولى من حكم أسرة آل العظم فيها.
تقصد هذه الدراسة البحث في جوانب متعددة من الحياة الثقافية بمفهومها الشامل، ابتداءً من أماكن تلقي العلم، ووظائف العاملين في هذا المجال، ومناهج التدريس، والطلبة في المدارس، ثم البحث في أصحاب الوظائف الدينية والقلمية في القضاء والإفتاء، ونقابة الأشراف وإدارة الأوقاف ونظارتها، وانتهاءً بالعاملين في ديوان الولاية من الدفتردارية وأرباب الأقلام والمحاسبات، وتنتقل الدراسة إلى البحث في نتاج تلك الفترة في فنون ومعارف متعددة، من أجل النظر في معارف تلك الفترة من حيث المؤلفات الجديدة، ودواعي التأليف وأشكاله، وتنتهي بدراسة علاقة أهل القلم مع محيطهم المحلي الإسلامي.
تبدو سمات أهل القلم خلال فترة الدراسة كمجموعة من المدرسين والأئمة والخطباء والكتاب، الذين نهضوا بوظائف دينية وتعليمية كانوا يتقاضون أجورهم عليها من الأوقاف، مع ما يقدمه الولاة لهم من هبات وما يجفعه الطلبة من أجر على دروسهم، كما نجدهم بمواقع مختلفة في القضاء والإفتاء ونقابة الأشراف وإدارة الأوقاف، وكذلك الحال مع شيوخ الطرق الصوفية الذين عينوا في وظائف دينية وتعليمية إلى جانب خلواتهم وحلقات ذكرهم التي قاموا بها في الزوايا، ولا تقف هذه السمات عند هؤلاء، بل تتعداهم لتشمل بعض زعماء العسكر الذين تحولوا من مهامهم ومواقعهم العسكرية إلى ملازمة المتصوفة والمدسين والأدباء، فصار منهم الشاعر والمتصوف والمدرس.
