درس حياة العظماء خير الدروس التي تعود على صاحبها بعميم الفوائد، وخصوصاً إذا كانت حياة العظيم مكتوبة بقلمه، وفي رأي العارفين أن أفضل ما كتبه تولستوي، الفيلسوف الروسي الذائع الشهرة، في تاريخ حياته وفلسفة الحياة عموماً هو الفصول التي أطلق عليها اسم "اعترافي، ديانتي، إنجيلي" وقد رأيت أن أنقلها إلى العربية رغبة في إطلاع أبناء قومي على ما فيها من الحقائق الجميلة والدروس النافعة، مبتدئاً بالكتاب الأول الذي سميته "اعترافات تولستوي" راجياً أن يقرأه الأدباء بما يستحقه من العناية، كتب تولستوي إعترافه هذا سنة 1879 فلم تسمح السلطة بطبعه في روسيا، ولذلك طبع في جنيف سويسرا، ومثله الكتاب الثاني والثالث، وقد ترجمت هذه الكتب إلى جميع اللغات الحية، وها هو الجزء الأول مناه، وإني منذ الآن ألفت أنظار القراء إلى حقيقة مهمة قبل قراءة هذا الإعتراف، وهي أن تولستوي يصف فيه أيام كفره المظلمة؛ ليجعلها مقدمة لأيام إيمانه المنيرة التي سيطالعها القراء في "ديانة توليستوي" و"إنجيل توليستوي".
