"تأبط شراً وإسمه ثابت بن جابر بن سفيان ينتهي نسبه إلى قيس عيلان بم مضر بن نزار (توفي سنة 540م)، أحد شعراء الصعاليك/ جاهلي عاش في بادية الحجاز، إشتهر بسرعته في العدو، شعره فحل، قتل في بلاد هذيل ورمي في غار يقال له غار رخمان
يتضمن هذا الكتاب نبذة عن حياة الشاعر تأبط شراً وديوانه الشعري مع (ذيل الديوان) ويضم مجموعة قصائد. بالإضافة إلى قصائد الديوان، ويسبق كل قصيدة المناسبة التي قيلت فيها، وقد توزعت القصائد على بحور الشعر العربي (شعر التفعيلة) مع شرح الألفاظ والمعاني.
يعتبر الأستاذ "طلال حرب" أنه على الرغم من الشعلا القليل الثابت لتأبط شراً فإن هذا الشعر ينهض شامخاً ويدل على أصالة الشعر تأبط شراً دائماً، بنبرة الواقعية والنزعة التصويرية الطبيعية، مع رؤيا حيوية للوجود فائزة بنزعات الإنسان القوي المقبل على المجهول إقبالة فنان وطفل وفارس مقدام(...)".
هذا، وقد تنوعت قصائد الديوان بين المديح والهجاء والرثاء والفخر وبلغت (63) ما بين قصيدة، وبيت واحد. أما (ذيل الديوان) فضم (11) قصيدة ومقطع شعري.
