هذا كتاب من الكتب القليلة التي تحدثت عن الاشتقاق في العربية، وهو لعالم موسوعي مجدد لم يعرف عنه اهتمام بالتأليف في العربية، وهو القاضي محمد بن علي الشوكاني، صاحب تفسير فتح القديم وإرشاد الفحول وغيرها من الكتب التي تعني بالقضايا الشرعية.
وتأتي أهمية هذا الكتاب من خلال كونه واحداً من الكتب القليلة لهذا العالم الذي يتعلق باللغة وأسرارها، كما أنه أحد الكتب القليلة التي تناولت موضوع الاشتقاق اللغوي، ويدل هذا الكتاب على سعة علم الشوكاني وقوة إدراكه واجتهاده في علوم اللغة، وأن اجتهاده لم يكن مقتصراً على العلوم الشرعية.
وبالنظر لأهمية فقد اعتنى "شريف عبد الكريم النجار" بتحقيقه أثناء إقامته في اليمن وذلك عام 1992م وكان حينئذ أحد طلبة الدراسات العليا في جامعة صنعاء.
وقد لجأ في تحقيق هذا الكتاب إلى المعاجم اللغوية، فقام بتفسير ما فيه من ألفاظ بعد عملية تقويم النص، فهذا كتاب لغوي تكثر فيه الألفاظ الغريبة التي تحتاج إلى تفسير، كما استعان بما وجد على هامش إحدى نسخ الكتاب من تعليقات ونقول، وقام بالترجمة للقاضي الشوكاني ووضع فهارس خاصة بهذا الكتاب.
