"ابن بطوطة" رحالة مشهور، دفعه حبه للسفر والتجوال إلى القيام بثلاث رحلات زار فيها مختلف أنحاء العالم المعروف في زمانه. وكانت رحلته الأولى سنة 725هـ/1325م، أنطلق فيها من طنجة قاصداً الحج. وقد استغرقت رحلاته الثلاث تسعاً وعشرين سنة، طاف فيها شمالي أفريقيا وشرق المتوسط، ووصل إلى الهند والصين والقوقاز وروسيا وأجزاء من أوروبا، وتعرف على الملوك والسلاطين وعمل لهم. وخالط المشايخ والصوفية والناس، وتعرض لأهوال كثيرة شائقة مثبوتة في الكتاب.
ولما عاد إلى المغرب، وأخذ يحدّث سلطان المغرب عن مشاهداته، بأسلوبه اللطيف الشائق، أمر السلطان كاتبه "ابن جزي" بكتابة روايات ابن بطوطة، فكان هذا الكتاب المشهور باسم "رحلة ابن بطوطة" الذي يجد القارىء فيه من العجائب والغرائب وعادات بعض الشعوب ما تعجز عن وصفه الأقلام.
وفي هذه الطبعة الجديدة استكملنا بعض نواقص الطبعة السابقة، وزودناها بفهارس علمية شاملة.
