لا شك في أن حالة التخبط والقلق التي يعيشها الجغرافيون في هذه الأيام، إنما تُعزى إلى افتقار الجغرافية إلى تحديد واضح لطبيعتها وموضوع دراستها. كما أن غيابها عن الساحة العملية قد عزّز الدعوى القائلة بعدم قدرتها على المشاركة في عمليات التخطيط والتنمية.
وحتى أولئك الذين تصدوا لهذه المشكلة، وعرضوا لمفهوم الجغرافية وموضوعها وأهدافها المختلفة، ووقفوا جزءاً كبيراً من مقالاتهم لخدمة هذه القضية، فإنهم سرعان ما وقعوا في شرك الضياع والبلبلة، وأصبحت آراؤهم جزءاً من هذه المشكلة.
ولا شك في أن تضاؤل الإقبال على الجغرافية في السنوات الأخيرة، وتسرّب الكثير من طلبة الجغرافية إلى الأقسام الأخرى، يؤكد التراجع المستمر لأهمية الجغرافية، ويعزّز الانطباع السائد لدى العامة، أن دورها يكاد يكون قاصراً على الناحية الثقافية، وأن إسهامها في الجوانب التطبيقية مشكوك فيه من الناحية العملية.
أما جهل المجتمع بأهمية الجغرافية بصفة عامة، فهو يرجع إلى عدم الاتفاق بين الجغرافيين أنفسهم على المجالات التي يحسنون العمل فيها، والتي تتفق مع طبيعة الجغرافية نفسها. وحينما يحاول الجغرافيون التعريف بتخصصهم، تتفاوت الآراء وتتباعد، بل تتناقص وتتضارب، فتصبح الصورة لدى المواطن أكثر غموضاً وأشد ظلاماً..
كل ذلك يدعونا لضرورة التصدّي لهذه المشكلة، والبحث عن الغموض الذي يلف عالم الجغرافية بصورة عامة: فنتساءل عما إذا كان هذا الخلط والغموض في أذهان الجغرافيين عن جهلٍ فيهم؟ أم أن الفكر الجغرافي يقتضيه؟ وهل هذا الاختلاف بين الجغرافيين في موضوع الجغرافية مرض يتطلب علاجاً؟ أم أنه من طبيعة الفكر الجغرافي نفسه؟
