لقد ازدهرت الحياة العلمية والثقافية والأدبية ازدهاراً كبيراً في القرن الرابع الهجري، في العراق موطن الخلافة، وفي الشام التي كانت مقراً لبلاط سيف الدولة، وفي معظم الحواضر التي نشأت ونافست المدن الكبرى في مختلف العلوم.
وقد حملت مدينة صور لواء الثقافة طوال قرون عديدة، فبرزت في القرن الرابع الهجري، بوصفها مركزاً للعلم والأدب من مراكز الساحل الشامي.
وقد ازدهر الأدب، في هذا القرن، في مدينة صور، كما ازدهر في مختلف الحواضر العربية؛ وذلك لأن الأمراء المحليين كانوا يشجعون العلماء والأدباء والشعراء على التردد إلى بلاطهم؛ وإلى عاصمة إمارتهم، ويقدمون لهم الجوائز، ليزدادوا بهم سمعة، وينافسوا خصومهم وأندادهم على السواء.
وقد أنجبت صور، إضافة لهجرة العلماء إليها، عشرات الأعلام، وفي مقدمتهم الحافظ أبو عبد الله السوري، والشاعر المشهور عبد المحسن الصوري، موضوع الدراسة، وغيث بن علي الأرمنازي مؤرخ صور، وإبن السراج الصوري الشاعر المصنّف، وغيرهم ...
والشاعر عبد المحسن هو أبو محمد عبد المحسن بن محمد بن أحمد بن غالب بن غلبون الصوري من شعراء القرن الرابع ونوابغ رجالاته، وقد مدّ له البقاء إلى أوائل القرن الخامس، له ديوان شعر فيه أكثر من خمسة آلاف بيت.
على هذا الأساس سعى المؤلف أحمد نزّال إلى تسليط الضوء على هذا الشاعر المغمور الذي أملّ الحديث عنه في كتب الأدب والتاريخ، لذا أعد هذا الكتاب الذي هو في الأساس، رسالة أعدّها لنيل شهادة دبلوم الدراسات العليا في اللغة العربية وآدابها.
تبيّن الخصائص الفنية التي يتميز بها الشعر من نحو أول، ودرس القضايا الرئيسية التي رأى إليها الشاعر وبيّن رؤيته إليها من نحو ثانٍ، ممهّدياً لذلك كله بتعرف وافٍ بالشاعر وبعصره.
