ولد الكاتب التركي فقير بايقورت عام 1929 في إحدى قرى محافظة بورضور. درس في معهد ريفي وعمل معلماً في القرى النائية مدة خمسة سنوات. ثم تابع دراسته الجامعية، وتخرج من كلية التربية –جامعة غازي- أنقرة. انخرط في العمل النقابي، وانتخب رئيساً لنقابة المعلمين في تركيا، ورئيساً للاتحاد القومي لروابط المعلمين في تركيا، عمله النقابي أودى به إلى السجن عام 1971. وبعد محاكمات طويلة أمام المحاكم العسكرية حصل على البراءة. هاجر إلى ألمانية، وأقام في مدينة "دوريسبورغ" حتى وفاته في عام 1999.
بدأ الكاتب شاعراً، ولكنه انتقل إلى القصة والرواية، وصدر له أربعة عشرة مجموعة قصصية واثنتا عشرة رواية. وكتب عدة مجموعات قصصية للأطفال. حصل على جوائز أدبية عديدة في تركيا، وقد حصل على جائزة "يونس نادي" للرواية عن روايته هذه عام 1958.
تعتبر رواية ثأر الأفاعي أول نموذج لتيار "أدب الريف" الذي ظهر في تركيا في أواسط الخمسينيات، وهي ليست نموذجاً رائداً لهذا الأدب فحسب، بل بقيت إحدى أهم روايات هذا التيار. وأدب الريف لا يقتصر على تناول موضوعات الريف فقط، بل يبحث في فنيات خاصة معتمداً على لغة الريف. فالرواية مكتوبة بالأصل بلغة (أو لجهة) محلية، وهذا ما جعل الترجمة قريبة من لغة المنطوق.
بايقورت أهم من صور الريف التركي، فقد صوره بعد معايشة عن كثب. نقلت هذه الرواية إلى السينما والمسرح، وأحدثت ضجة كبيرة في تركيا إثر صدورها، ووصلت هذه الضجة إلى مجلسي النواب والشيوخ، ونوقشت في جلسات رسمية لهذين المجلسين، وطالب بعض الأعضاء بمنعها عام 1962. قال عن هذه الرواية يشاركمال: "رواية ثأر الأفاعي عمل لن ينسى في أدبنا، وسيتبع". ما زالت تتوالى طبعاتها في تركيا، وقد طبعت بين عامي 1997-2001 ست طبعات.
