كانت سوق عكاظ تجتمع في الأشهر الحُرُم، فيفد الناس إليها آمنين، ثم يذهبون منها إلى سوق مَجنَّة، فسوق ذي المجاز، فموسم الحج الأكبر ، وعكاظ في طريق أهل اليمن ونجد إلى مكة.. وقد غلط من ظن أن سوق عكاظ كانت تقام في شهر شوال، فليس هذا الشهر من الأشهر الحُرُم وجاء في الأغاني أن أن عبد الله النهدي الشاعر الجاهلي أراد المضيَّ إلى بلاد بني نميرٍ ليرى حبيبته هند، فمنعه أبوه وخوَّفه الثارات، وقال له: تجتمع معهم في الشهر الحرام بعكاظ أو بمكة … وفي سيرة ابن هشام في فصل حرب الفجار:فأتى آتٍ قريشًا، فقال: إن البرَّاض قد قتل عُروة وهم بالشهر الحرام بعكاظ... وهذه الروايات وأخرى غيرها شاهدة بأن عكاظ كانت تقام في الأشهر الحرم.
