معلوم أن السودان يمر بأخطر منعطف في تاريخه السياسي الراهن، إذ تتراكم معضلات حكمه طبقات فوق طبقات، وتذهب العلاقة بين جنوبه شماله في اتجاهات شتى من بينها اتجاه اللاعودة - أي شمال للشماليين، وجنوب للجنوبيين، تبقت بضع أشهر، وتنزل قضية إستفتاء جنوب السودان حول خياري الوحدة أو الإنفصال، إلى أرض الواقع فاتحة بذلك كوة هائلة في الجدار المرهق المصاب.
د. منصور خالد في هذا الكتاب يحفر حفره العميق المعهود في طبقات صهر معضلات السياسة في السودان بدءًا بذلك الهول المنتظر (الإستفتاء حول تقرير مصير جنوب السودان) وما آل إليه حال إتفاقية نيفاشا بين الحركة الشعبية، وحكومة حزب المؤتمر الوطني، إلا إنه قبل هذا أو ذلك يقود قاطرة بحثه منذ عشية إستقلال السودان، وحتى نهاية العهد المايوي، ثم إنقلاب الإنقاذ، إن دافع المؤلف كما يقول هو تذكير بخطر الإنهيار (إنهيار مكعبات الدومينو) فالدومينو لا يتماسك إلا بتساند مكعباته، وإن وقع ذلك الإنهيار وهو وشيك، فهو قد وقع بفعل فاعل، ومن صنع بشر لت تضل الأصابع إلى الإشارة إلى كامل أوصافهم وملامحهم.
