"الشبكات الإسلاميَة" إصطلاح مهم ذو قسمين. فكلمة "شبكات" تشير إلى ظواهر شبيهة بالعلاقات الإجتماعية المؤسسية، مثل الإنتماءات القبلية والسلالات السياسية، ولكنها متميزة عن تلك الظواهر أيضاً؛ لأن الإرتباط بالشبكات يستتبع إختيار الترابط عبر حدود معترف بها. أما كلمة "إسلاميَة" فهي تشير إلى توجه إيماني، وتشير كذلك إلى عالم إجتماعي ليس المسلمون فيه هم المسيطرون دائماً.
