يتناول هذا الكتاب حقبة من تاريخ سورية حافظ الأسد (1970- 2000)، حين كان يسيطر بقبضة من حديد على جميع مناحي الحياة اليومية؛ الإقتصادية والسياسية والثقافية والفنية.
ويسلط الضوء على سياسات الأسد التي كانت تتيح أحياناً التعبير عن المشاعر المناهضة للحكومة من خلال رعاية أعمال بعض الفنانين والكتاب بقصد تحويل نقد الحكومة إلى سياسة رسمية تهدف إلى تنفس الإحتقان، ما اضطر بعض الفنانين السوريين المعارضين إلى التأرجح بين الرغبة في إنتقاد النظام الدكتاتوري بشكل حقيقي والمخاطرة بسلامتهم والخشية من إستخدام النظام أعمالهم الفنية في الدعاية الحكومية التي كان يبرع الأسد في توظيفها في صيغة "النقد الموجّه".
يزخر الكتاب بمقابلات أجرتها المؤلفة بين خريف 1995 وربيع 1996، مع فنانين وأدباء سوريين معارضين، راسمة بذلك المشهد الفني في سورية الذي كان يهيمن عليه عمالقة من أمثال محمد الماغوط، ومحمد ملص، ونادية الغزي، وكوليت خوري، وإلفة الإدلبي، وغادة السمان، وممدوح عدوان، وسعد الله ونوس وغيرهم.
إنها سورية الأخرى... سورية الفن المعارض... سورية الأدب الممزوج بمعاناة سنين في سجون المزة وتدمر وصيدنايا... وسورية المعارضة الناعمة التي ربّت بخطابها بعض الظلم والسلطوية وحكم الفرد الواحد.
