نشأ علم الرجال وترعرع في أحضان المسلمين، فشيَّدوا أُسُسه وقواعده بُغية تمييز الأحاديث الصحيحة عن السقيمة، وفرزِ التاريخ الصحيح عن الزائف، لا سيّما وإنّهما كانا يتناقلان عبر الأسانيد في العصور الأولى، وبهذا أسدّوا خدمة جليلة للسنّة النبوية والتاريخ الإسلامي، ينتفع بها الخلف بعد السلف، فشكر الله مساعيهم الجميلة، ولا يتيسَّر لنا في هذه العجالة الإشارة إلى الموسوعات والكتب المؤلّفة في ذلك المضمار، وكفانا في ذلك ما دوّنه أصحابُ المعاجم في كتبهم.
ولكنّ الّذي دعا المؤلّف إلى تأليف هذا الكتاب مع توفّر الكتب الرجالية، هو أنّ العصر الحاضر هو عصرُ السرعة والوصول إلى المعلومات في أسرع وقت وأُيسر سبيل، والكتاب الماثل بين يديك يتمتّع بهذه المزيّة ويُوقف القارئ على ضالّته المنشودة حول الرواة رجال الحديث في برهة قصيرة للغاية، وبذلك قد ملأ الفراغ الهائل في المكتبة الرجالية الّتي تزخر بعشرات الكتب والرسائل.
