إن علم الأحلام في تراثنا، تكون وترسخ قبل ترجمة كتاب أرطاميدورس الأفسسي، أو كتب يونانية أخرى، فقيل ذلك كان المسلمون، قد شرعوا في الإنكفاء على الأحلام نظرةً لإرتباطها بالرؤيا الصادقة، ومن ثم بالنبوة وبأحلام الأئمة الصالحين وبالحديث النبوي، والفتوحات والمغازي والعوالم الإجتماعية، وتطور الحضارة.
ثم إنَّ الأحلام في القرآن الكريم، وهنا منطلق بارز - علم شجعه التفسير القرآني بضروراته ومتطلباته، ولا يغفل أيضاً تأثير التراث العربي قبل الإسلام، إذ غذى علم تعبير الرؤيا العربي الإسلامي بروافد الكهانة والعرافة وبمعتقدات حول الجن والسحريات، وغير ذلك من المعارف عن المُعمى والمقلوب والألغاز ومن التصورات الأسطورية والرمزية للوجود والمصير أو الحياة والموت والنور والظلام، أو لحلول المشكلات الفردية والجماعية وعلى المستويات التواصلية والمعرفية.
في الحقيقة، بين الترجمة إلى العربية لكتاب "تعبير الرؤيا" لأرطاميدورس (أواخر القرن الثامن الميلادي)، وإعادته مترجماً من العربية إلى اللاتينية في القرن السادس عشر، تمتد فترة زمنية، أنتج خلالها الفكر العربي عمالقة في علم التعبير، وكذلك فقد احتل ذلك الميدان أهمية ملحوظة في التصوف والفقه والفلسفة المفسرة للنبوة والحكمة، حيث امتزج تفسير الحلم بالقطاعات الإنسانية واللغة من جهة، وبالمستقبل والتنبؤ والمخاوف من جهة أخرى.
