أنتوني غيدنز أو البارون جيدنز (ولد في لندن في 18 يناير 1938) عالم اجتماع إنجليزي معاصر، اشتهر لوضعه نظرية الهيكلة (بالإنجليزية: Theory of structuration) سنة 1984، كما عرف بنظرته الكلانية إلى المجتمعات المعاصرة. تخرج غيدنز في جامعة هل سنة 1959 متخصصًا في علمي النفس والاجتماع، ثم حصل على درجة الماجستير من كلية لندن للاقتصاد، ثم دكتوراه الفلسفة من كلية الملك بكامبردج سنة 1961. يعد غيدنز أحد أبرز علماء الاجتماع المعاصرين. نشر ما لا يقل عن 34 كتابًا (بمعدل كتاب واحد سنويًا تقريبًا)، ترجمت إلى ما لا يقل عن 29 لغة. من مؤلفاته "الطريق الثالث: تجديد االديمقراطية الاجتماعية" (1998) و"نقد معاصر للمادية التاريخية".

من بين كافة التغيرات التي تحدث في العالم- ليس هناك ما هو أهم من تلك التي تشهدها حياتنا الشخصية- في مجال السلوك الجنسي والعلاقات الشخصية والزواج والأسرة. فثمة ثورة كونية تعتري الكيفية التي نفكر بها في أنفسنا ونكون بها علاقات وارتباطات مع الآخرين. وهى ثورة تحدث بطريقة غير متكافئة في العديد من الأقاليم والثقافات وتواجه أشكالاً متعددة من المقاومة.. وبمعني ما فإن هذه هى أكثر التحولات صعوبة ومدعاة للقلق. فأغلبنا يمكنه أن يتجاهل المشكلات العامة أغلب الأوقات- ويعد هذا أحد أسباب صعوبة التعاون فيما بيننا للعمل على حلها. غير أنه ليس في إمكاننا أن نعزل أنفسنا عن دوامة التغير التي تصل إلى قلب حياتنا الوجدانية مباشرة.
