وعاش من غير أبهة أو مراسم، وكان للجميع الحق في الحضور أمامه سواء كان ذلك شيخاً أم عبداً، غنياً أو فقيراً، وجميعهم مرحّب بهم ضيوف لديه، وحضر الجميع لديه متحملين المخاطرة شخصياً، فقد امتلك سلطة الموت والحياة وبتر الأعضاء ولا يوجد إستئناف على حكمه، كان أشبه بالخلفاء العظام وهو جالس في قاعة التشريفات من قصره في الرياض بعباءته العربية البنية وقد لفّها حوله، ووجهه الذي يشبه وجه الصقر ومنكبيه العظيمين قد ارتيما إلى الأمام وهو يستقبل رعاياه ويستمع إلى طلباتهم وشكاواهم أو يعطي أوامر موجزة إلى موظفيه.
ويرسم هذا الكتاب ملامح هذه الشخصية العربية والمسلمة المتميزة لتبقى حية أمام القارئ وماثلة في ضمير المسيحيين والأوروبيين؛ وقد اعتمد على الكتب والمقالات والسجلات الوثائقية، وعلى المرجعان الأساسيان السيد "سانت جون فيلبي" وهو مسلم إنكليزي والسيد "أمين التركاني" وهو عربي مسيحي من جنسية أميركية، والجزء الأكبر من الأدلة التي قام المؤلف بجمعها هي حصيلة مخاطبات شفوية.
