وصل لورنس أوليفانت إلى بيروت، وقام بجولة في جنوب لبنان، تحدث فيها عن المتاولة والنصيريين وعقيدتهم وتاريخهم وطقوسهم ومجتمعهم ومدى إضطهادهم وإحتقارهم للمرأة، وأنهم أصحاب العقيدة (التِّقِيَّة) الباطنية، وكيف أن طائفة من هؤلاء كانوا يجوبون مضارب العربان في جنوب سوريا وبلاد جلعاد بالأردن، يبيعون بضاعتهم، ويشترون منتجات البدو، ولهم معهم علاقة حسنة وودية.
ثم يعبر برَّاً إلى الجولان ذات الأهمية الإستراتيجية فضلاً عن إحتوائها للثروات الغنية، إلى أن يصل إلى منطقة ما يسميه؛ ضريح سيدنا أيوب عليه السلام.
يتحدث المؤلف عن بلدة إربد ثم عن عجلون وقلعة الربض، ويصف بدقة جبالها وسهولها وغاباتها، هادفاً إلى البحث عن مواقع للإستيطان اليهودي في هذه الديار، حيث يجد أن أراضي جرش هي الأخصب، بسبب توفر المياه والطقس المناسب والغابات والقرب من البحر الأبيض المتوسط.
ثم يصف مبيته عند العدوان في منطقة ياجوز وشفا بدران، ويتحدث عن قبر نمر العدوان قرب خربة ياجوز، ويصف أشجار البطم والمقبرة من حوله، وكيف وضع البدو أدواتهم وما يخصهم ضمن حوطة قبر نمر العدوان، حيث يجرؤ أحد على سرقتها أو أخذها وإنها تتمتع بحمايته وحماية قبيلته وهو في قبره.
ويتحدث عن تصدير رماد Kali من البلقاء إلى نابلس لإستخدامه هناك في صناعة الصابون، كما تحدث من قبل عن تصدير القمح من سهول حوران الأردنية والسورية إلى فلسطين وأوروبا.
ورغم ما في هذا الكتاب من حقد على النصارى العرب والإسلام والمسلمين والبدو والعشائر، وأنه لا يتحدث إلا عن السلبيات، ويغمض عينيه وقلمه عن الإيجابيات إلا أن في الكتاب مادة أدبية على مستوى رفيع، وفيه أيضاً مخططاً واضحاً وكاملاً وعميقاً ودقيقاً، ليس للإستيطان اليهودي فحسب، بل ولطريقته والمخططات اللازمة للقيام به، وفلسفته.
