إن جماعة من الراغبين في الوقوف علي منازل السائرين إلي الحق عز اسمه من الفقراء من أهل القراءة والغرباء، طال علي مسألتهم زماناً أن أبين لهم بياناً، ليكون علي معالمها عنواناً، فاجبتهم لذلك بعد استخارتي الله تعالي واستعانتي به، وسألوني أن أرتبها لهم ترتيباً يشير إلي تواليها، ويدل علي الفروع التي تليها، وأن أخليه من كلام غيري، واختصره ليكون ألطف فب اللفظ و أخف للحفظ، وإني خفت إن أخذت في شرح قول أبي بكر الكناني أن بين الحق والعبد ألف مقام من النور والظلمة طولت علي وعليهم.
فذكرت أبنية المقامات التي تشير إلي تمامها وتدل علي مواقعها، وأرحوكم بعد صدق قصدهم، ما قال أبو عبيد الله البسري: إن الله عباداً يريهم في بداياتهم ما في نهاياتهم، ثم إني رتبت لهم فصولا وابواباً يغني ذلك الترتيب عن التطويل المؤدي إلي الملال، ويكون مندوحة عن التسآل، فجعلته مائة مقام مقسومة علي عشرة أقسام، وقد قال الجنيد رحمه الله تعالي: قد ينقل العبد من حال إلي حال أرفع منه، وقد بقي عليه من التي نقل عنها بفية، فيشؤف عليها من الحالة الثانية فيصلحها، وعندى ان العبد لا يصح له مقام حتي يرتفع عنه ثم يشرف عليه فيصححه.
وأعلم أن السائرين في هذه المقامات علي إختلاف عظيم مفظع، لا يجمعها ترتيب قاطع، ولا يفقرهم منهي جامع، وقد صنف جماعة من المتقدمين والمتأخرين في هذا الباب تصانيف، غير إنه لا نراها أو أكثرها علي حسنها مغنية كافية.
