كان عُرَف المتكلمين قد جرى على التمييز بين فنين من الفكر الكلامي، هما بحث مقدمات النظر الفلسفي أو "دقيق الكلام" وبحث قضايا الإعتقاد الإسلامي أو "جليل الكلام" وهذا التمييز نفسه كان مؤذناً بوجوه من التفاوت بينهما، فجليل الكلام هو الذي يطلب إعتقاده في نفس الأمر، والذي يُلمَّ به المصنف الكلامي مطولاً أو مختصراً فلا يخل بشيء منه، وهو كذلك الذي يُنشر المعلم به في جموع العامة، بخلاف دقيق الكلام الذي يكاد يقتصر تناوله على خاصة المتكلمين.
تأتي هذه الدراسة عن مركز نماء، يسعى من خلالها المؤلف للكشف عن طبيعيات علم الكلام والجدل الذي دار حولها عند متكلمة الإسلام، وصلتها وآثارها على مباحث الإلهيات والسمعيات، حيث رصد الباحث ان دارس المقامات النظرية الكلامية قد يلفته فيها أمران: أحدهما أن متابعة المصنفات الكلامية في مواقع تاريخية مختلفة تفيد أن مساحة الفصول التي تفرد لبحث المقدمات العامة ومسائل الأعراض والجواهر في مساحة دائمة الإتساع، حتى لتطغى في مثل "المباحث المشرقية"، و"المواقف" و"المقاصد"، على ما يخصص لبحث الإلهيات والسمعيات جميعاً، والأمر الآخر، أن طائفة من المتكلمين تُرتب أحكاماً شرعية عديدة في مسائل ربما لا يظهر أنها تستدعي مثل هذه الأحكام.
ويرى المؤلف أن الأمران جديران بأن يلفتا المتابع لعلم الكلام الإسلامي في تطوره التاريخي، ويغرياه بأن يبحث في شأن الصلة بين هذه المقدمات النظرية ومسائل الإعتقاد في نفس الأمر من الإلهيات والسمعيات وكيف أتفق لهذا الضرب من البحث النظري أن ينمو ويمتد في مصنفات أصول الدين حتى تنبني عليه أحكم بهذه الشدة، وينبثق منه جدل بهذا الإتساع، وحتى يبلغ في البناء الفني لبعض تلك المصنفات نحو الثلثين ليدع ثلثا في تقرير العقائد نفسها، وهي مصنفات علم الكلام المتأخر التي اتسعت في ذلك البحث النظري على نحو أخفى وجه العلاقة بينها وبين الأصول الدينية، وهي الأصول التي أدرجت تلك المقدمات لتكون إثباتاً لها، ودلالةً عليها، أو كما قد نقول معادلاً نظرياً، لها.
