يدور هذا البحث حول رؤية كل من ابن باجة وابن رشد لموضوع النفس والعقل سواء في الفلسفة الطبيعية أو الإلهية، وقد تناول كل منهما مشكلة النفس واهتم بدراستها انطلاقاً من الإيمان بأهمية دراستها وضرورة معرفتها التي تعين على معرفة الحقيقة كاملة، وأن العلم بها أشرف العلوم والعمل على إلقاء الضوء على جوانب هامة في الفلسفة العربية من خلال عقد مقارنة بين اثنين من أكبر مفكريها واللذين يعدان بقوة فيلسوفاً العقل في الإسلام. علماً بأن بحث فكرة واحدة لدى شخصين مختلفين تساعد على بيان هذه الفكرة ومعرفة قيمتها معرفة دقيقة، وأيضاً معرفة أماكن القوة والضغف فيها، وبيان تأثر اللاحق بالسابق، هذا فضلاً عما ينبثق من أفكار أخرى جديدة قد تتولد من وضع فكرة كل منهما وجهاً لوجه أو تحليلها في إطار واحد.
