اللغة أداة يعبر بها المرء عن أفكاره وهي تلعب دوراً رئيسياً في تكوين الأمم ونشوئها، إضافة إلى ذلك قد تشكل اللغة عائقاً في بعض الأحيان يحول دون فهم ما يراد من بعض المصطلحات والعبارات إذ تتوفر بعض اللغات على عدد كبير من المصطلحات العلمية الحديثة بينما تفتقر بعض اللغات إلى ذلك. ومرد ذلك عند البعض إلى أن هناك لغات متطورة وأخرى بدائية. إلا أن حقيقة الأمر هو أن كل لغة قادرة على إيجاد تسميات جديرة للمخترعات والمكتشفات الحديثة من خلال توليد ألفاظ جديدة باللجوء إلى ما تحفل به اللغة من قدرة على الاشتقاق، والتركيب، والنحت.

واللغة العربية لا تشد عن ذلك، فلقد ساهمت عبر العصور في نقل الحضارة الإنسانية واستيعابها وهي تعد من بين اللغات الخمس الوحيدة التي لعبت دوراً بارزاً في نقل الحضارة ومازالت إلى اليوم قادرة على لعب هذا الدور. ورغم ادعاء البعض أن العربية لغة دينية وليست لغة علمية وإنها لغة جامدة وتفتقر إلى العدد الكافي من اللواصق وبالتالي فهي عاجزة عن نقل ما تحفل به اللغات الأجنبية من مصطلحات. فإن الحقيقة عكس ذلك تماماً إذ أن اللغة العربية لغة اشتقاقية ليست بحاجة إلى وسائل أخرى لتوليد المصطلحات كما أنها تحفل بعدد كبير من اللواصق قد تفوق بعددها ما هو موجود في لغات أخرى.

وهي علاوة على ذلك تتوفر على كم هائل من المجموعات اللغوية وما علينا سوى استغلال هذه الثروة الهائلة بدلاً من خلق صيغ جديدة لم تعهدها اللغة العربية، والقاموس الوجيز في الجذور العلمية يقدم منهجاً جديداً لدراسة بعض جوانب منهجية وضع المصطلحات العلمية وهو يعكس عن اللغة العربية ويكشف عن طبيعة بنيتها.
