هذا الكتاب محاولة لتنظيم ميدان الإحصاء النفسي والتربوي والاجتماعي في ضوء محددين رئيسين وجها المؤلفين خلال تدريسهما لهذا الموضوع لفترة امتدت لأكثر من ثلاثين عاماً، وأول هذين المحددين التطورات التي شهدها هذا العلم من حيث الطرق المستخدمة وآليات الاستخدام، ولعل أعظم هذه التطورات والتي أثرت في حياتنا بصفة عامة والباحث بصفة خاصة ألا وهو ظهور الحاسب الآلي وما أحدثه من تغير وتطور في تفكير الإنسان.
أما المحدد الثاني فهو تنظيم الطرق الإحصائية طبقاً لمستويتها وللأهداف الأساسية للعلم، فجاءت منظمة بدءاً من الإحصاء الوصفي ثم الإحصاء الاستدلالي ثم تحليل بيانات مستويات النسبة والمسافة في تحليل المتغيرات المتعددة، كذلك تم تحديد الطرق الأخرى لتحليل بيانات مقاييس الرتبة، وجاء الباب الأخير في تحليل بيانات المقاييس الإسمية، ويجدر الإشارة أن المسائل الإحصائية لا يمكن إدراك مغزاها دون نظرة - ولو مبسطة - إلى فلسفة العلم، لذا وجدنا من المهم أن نتناول موضوعات العلم ولغة الكم وطبيعة القياس في العلوم النفسية والتربوية والإجتماعية، كذلك تم عرض لمناهج البحث فذ دات المجال مضافة إلى البعد الزمني للبحث، وأهدافه وطرق اختيار العينات وحجمها ودرجة التحكم في المتغيرات وطرق جمع المعلومات ووسائله.
