"الرسالة الحميدية في حقيقة الديانة الإسلامية وحقيقة الشريعة المحمدية" كتاب بارز في المؤلفات التي ظهرت في القرن التاسع عشر، في فترة استعادة الفكر الإسلامي لأصوله، والتيقن من أصالته، ومواجهته للتحديات التي برزت في الغرب أمام الدين والإيمان، ويندر أن نعثر على كتاب يشبه الرسالة الحميدية في تناوله لموضوعه، ولعل أقرب الكتب إليه موضوعاً وزمناً، رسالة التوحيد الإمام محمد عبدة، ورسالة الرد على الدهريين "للإمام الأفغاني" إذ تجمع الرسالة الحميدية بين عمق كتاب الشيخ عبده في دفاعه عن العقيدة الإسلامية، وحماس الإمام الأفغاني في صد الدعوات التي تهدد الإيمان، وكان مؤلف الرسالة "الشيخ حسين الجسر" يشعر بخطورة العمل الذي يقوم به، ويخشى في نفس الوقت أن تطاله انتماءات المحافظين، لهذا التزم الحذر الشديد في كتابته لرسالته التي تأسست على النقاش مع الماديين والطبيعيين، وانبثقت في الأجواء السجالية التي دارت بين "الأفغاني" و"الشميل"، لكن "حسين الجسر" آثر أن تأتي محاولته مبنية على أسس متينة، لهذا ابتدأ بشرح ودفاع عن العقيدة الإسلامية ليجدد مواقعه وأدواته في سجاله مع خصومه.
وإذا كانت مقارعة حجج الماديين والطبيعيين تحتل الجزء الأعظم من الرسالة، فإنها لا تشكل الموضوع الوحيد لها، وعلى هذا الأساس فإن الرسالة التي كتبت كمقال متواصل لا انقطاع فيه، يمكن قسمتها إلى الأقسام التالية أولاً: الدفاع عن العقيدة الإسلامية وتبيان صحتها، ثانياً: شرح أركان الإسلام والإيمان، ثالثاً: الرد على النظريات الحديثة في وجه نظر الإيمان، رابعاً: تأسيس موقف إسلامي معاصر، أو علم توحيد جديد، خامساً: الرد على بعض ما ينتقض به الإسلام هذا القسم الأخير يشكل موضوع الرسالة.
إن الرسالة الحميدية التي كتبها "حسين الجسر" هي عمل مثير للانتباه ليس فقط لعمقها ودقتها واتساع أفق صاحبها، بل لأن مؤلفها قد كتبها في ظروف غير ملائمة للبحث الفكري المجرد، فلم تكن الأجواء في مدينة طرابلس لتساعد على إخراج عمل من هذا النوع، من حيث توفير مادة البحث أو توفير جو ملائم للنقاش والجدل. وليس أمامنا سوى الإعجاب بروح البحث التي تمتع بها الشيخ الجسر.
