تكمن أهمية هذا الكتاب الذي نحن بصدده الآنم في أن الفرق بينه وبين كتاب تاريخ آخر يتسم بالجمود والجفاف أن مؤلفي هذا الكتاب قد عاصروا حكم " الرايخ الثالث"، كما لعبت الخبرات التي اكتسبوها أثناء تلك الفترة دوراحاسما في حياتهم بعد ذلك.
لأن من يتمعن في هذا العصر يدرك أنه لم يكن مجرد تاريخا فحسب، بل أنه تاريخ ملىء بالاحداث والقصص التي يمكن أن نتعلم منها، فهي قصص تدور حول صنفين من الأشخاص: الصنف الأول شارك في الأحداث من أجل مصلحته الشخصية فحسب، والصنف الثاني خاطر بحياته ليساعد أناسا آخرين، ويتسم الصنف الثاني بأنهم أشخاص غير معروفينونذكر منعهم علي سبيل المثال الأخوة شول، الذين قاموا بتوزيع منشورات مناهضة لهتلر وللحرب وذلك في جامعة مونشن، مما أدى إلي إعدامهم، وفي أغلب الأحيان كان هذا الصنف من الأشخاص أبطالاً مجهولين، ومن امثال هؤلاء هيلتجوند تسازينهاوس، التى طالبوا منها أن تقوم بالقضاء علي خطابات أرسلها مساجين يهود إلي أهلهم، ولكنها لم تنفذ تلك الأوامر، بل علي العكس من ذلك: فقد اهتمت بإرسال تلك الخطابات إلي العناوين الصحيحة، لكن المخابرات كشفت أمرها وتلقت أوامر بالقضاء عليها، وعندما سوئلت بعد سنوات عن الأسباب التى دفعتها للقيام بذلك أجابت: " إنه واجب إنساني فكل إنسان تأتي له الفرصة لإبداء الشجاعة والتشبث بالمقاومة".
