تتناول هذه الدراسة فقراء القاهرة في عصر من عصور السيادة الإسلامية، وهي القرنين السادس والسابع الهجريين، وتأتي أهمية الموضوع لتلبية الحاجة بإلقاء الضوء على بعض ما يخص شريحة الفقراء في القاهرة في عصورهم الرابضة؛ على أساس أن الفقراء كانوا إحدى القوى الإجتماعية التي تعرضت للتجاهل من قبل المؤرخين، والمعاصرين، لإهتمامهم بتاريخ الحكام والسلاطين، وأهملوا تلك الشريحة التي تشكل جزءاً حيوياً من المجتمع المصري في عصور سيادتها.
ومن المعروف أن هذا النمط من الدراسات كان – ولا يزال – تكتنفه حالة من الغموض، لإعراض وعزوف كثير من المؤرخين المعاصرين عن ذكر تاريخ الرعية والإهتمام بذكر تاريخ الحكام، وفي نفس الوقت فإن كثيراً من الباحثين المحدثين يحجبون عن الخوض في مثل هذه الدراسات آخذين بمبدأ توخي المادة العلمية لأي موضوع يتصل بالطبقة الحاكمة.
على أية حال؛ فإن موضوع (فقراء القاهرة في عصور السيادة الإسلامية) هو إطلالة ورؤية عامة لمحاولة فه الوجود الإجتماعي لأبسط شريحة داخل فئات عامة القاهرة إبان فترة الدراسة (القرنيين السادس والسابع).
لذلك، فقد قمنا بمحاولة دراسة خاصة تتناول حياتهم في شكل هياكل أساسية من خلال كشف النقاب عن المجهول من أنماط حياتهم، وبوادر مساعدة الغير لهم، وقد نهجت في هذه الدراسة نهجاً موضوعياً لم ألتزم فيه بالتسلسل الزمني للأحداث المتعارف عليه في كتب الحوليات وإن كنت قد التزمت بهذا التسلسل في التمثيل لأسباب ونتائج الحديث عن الفقراء في إطار الفكرة الواحدة المراد البحث فيها، بل التزمت بالأسلوب الوصفي التحليليق في تفسير جوانب الأوضاع الإجتماعية والإقتصادية والسياسية لهم وتحديد دورهم في السياق التاريخي المناسب... والله من وراء القصد.
