إنه كياح!
بعواصفه وبرده الذي يتغرغر في أصغر خلية في العظام. الريح ترج البلدة الصغيرة. وتبعث في الناس. شعوراً بالخوف من ثمة شئ مجهول. المجهول الذي نسجته، على مدى قرون، الحكايات عن الليل والنهر وغابات النخل و.. المقابر!
البلدة كأنها طيف عابر، في غمامة الأتربة العالقة، مخفية وغير مخفية. لائذة بحضن النهر، كشئ مموه منه. كان عليه، كما هي العادة، أن يجلب الماء، هو و (عشمانة).
(عشمانة) كانت قد تأخرت، على غير العادة، في بيت (عفاف) التي كانت تنضج بسكوتاً، واستعانت بها لإعداده ووضع الحطب وإشعاله تحت الفرن البلدي. تأخرت إلى أن جن الليل وانقطع دبيب الأقدام الآدمية، فاضطرت (عفاف) لأن تحمل فانوساً وتوصلها إلى البيت.
كانا يجلبان الماء، عادة، قبل غروب الشمس، خاصة أن زمهرير كياح يتسرب إلى أعماق النفس، فيكاد يطفئها. كانت النار المشتعلة في كومة حطب، وسط الحجرة، تبعث في نفسه شعوراً بالراحة، أخذ يتبخر تدريجياً، حين بدأ يفكر أنه سيتعين عليه، بعد حين، مغادرة الحجرة الدافئة إلى الطرقات الباردة، الباردة جداً.
