يعتبر تعريف الإنسان بأنه حيوان ناطق تعريفاً جامعاً ومانعاً ودقيقاً إلى أقصى حد، فقدرة الإنسان على النطق هي الميزة الحاسمة التي ينفرد بها عن سائر المخلوقات الحية الأخرى أياً كانت صورتها.ولهذا تعتبر اللغة والكلام هما تلك المعجزة البشرية الدائمة بدوام الحياة البشرية، فهما يشكلان مكوناً أساسياً وحيوياً من الكيان البشري، ويعدا بمثابة النافذة التي نطل منها على الأفكار التي تراود الفرد، أي أنها –اللغة- الوسيط الأمثل لنقل المشاعر والآراء من عقل لآخر.يتضح مما سبق أن جوهر اللغة ما هو إلا اتفاق جماعة من الناس على مجموعة من الرموز يقيمون من خلالها علاقات اجتماعية مترابطة: أي أن اللغة تشير إلى تلك المجموعات المنظمة من العادات الصوتية التي يتفاعل بواسطتها أعضاء المجتمع الإنساني في إطار ثقافتهم، وذلك خلال نظام من الرموز المتفق عليها، وفي ضوء ما سبق يتضح مدى أهمية اللغة فبقدر ما تتسم اللغة بالسواء والطلاقة بقدر ما يكون دالاً على شخصية متكاملة إلى حد كبير، أما إذا اضطربت اللغة، فإن ذلك سوف يؤثر تأثيراً بالغاً على شخصية الفرد ويصبح الكلام حينئذ باعثاً على الاضطراب وسوء التوافق النفسي والاجتماعي.ومنذ ظهور هذه العلوم ظهرت دراسات وبحوث علمية متخصصة في ظواهر عيوب الكلام وأسبابها وطرق علاجها، وتنقسم هذه العيوب حسب مسبباتها التي قد ترجع إلى سوء التدريب على طرق النطق الصحيح للحروف والكلمات، أو ترجع إلى أسباب نفسية أو عصبية أو عقلية، كما قد ترجع إلى عيوب خلقية في التكوين العضوي للشفتين واللسان والأسنان، وبعض أجزاء الجهاز الصوتي للإنسان.وتؤدي هذه العيوب عادة إلى بعض الأمراض الكلامية مثل اللجلجة والتهتهة والفأفأة، أو الخنف أو عدم القدرة على تنغيم الكلمات كالإطالة في نطق الحروف أو إبدال بعض الحروف بحروف أخرى أو إلى ما يعرف بالحبسة الكلامية… إلخ.
