لقد جاء هذا الكتاب استجابة للحاجة الملحة إلى استكشاف متاهات الأثر الناجم عن تعلم لغة أجنبية ثانية (اللغة الفرنسية في الكتاب الحالي) في تعلم الأجنبية الأخرى(اللغة الانكليزية في الكتاب الحالي) على مستوى النظام الصوتي، ولهذا فقد أخذت هذه الدراسة على عاتقها مهمة تقصي مدى مصداقية الفرضيات أدناه: 1- تعلم الجوانب المقطعية للنظام الصوتي الخاص باللغة الأجنبية الأولى من شأنه أن يتيسر بتأثير تعلم النظام نفسه للغة الأجنبية الثانية. 2- تعلم الصوتيمات (Segmental Phonemes ) الخاصة باللغة الأجنبية الثانية من شأنه أن يؤثر سلباً على تعلم صوتيمات اللغة الأجنبية الأولى. 3- أثر اللغة الأجنبية الثانية في اللغة الأجنبية الأولى أكبر منه في مرحلة الدراسة الجامعية عنه في المرحلة الثانوية. لتفحص صحة الفرضيات أعلاه صمم اختبار ذي أقسام ثلاثة استنادا إلى النتائج المستخلصة من اختبار استطلاعي، وقد روعي في تصميم الاختبار النهائي تغطيته لعدد معين من أصوات الحركات والسواكن في النظام اللغوي الانكليزي وذلك على مستويي التمييز والأداء. استخدمت هذه الدراسة الأساليب الاحصائية ذات الصلة لضمان مصداقية صحة البحث وتم اختيار لجنة من الخبراء لبيان الصدق الظاهري وصدق محتوى الاختبار.
