تدور أحداث المسرحية حول عالمين متناقضين: عالم دائرة التجارة وعلى رأسها تاجر لندن وأتباعه، ويتميز بالصدق والاستقامة والانضباط ـ من ناحية؛ وعالم تتزعمه امرأة لعوب ويقوم على الخبث والفسق والخديعة ـ من ناحية أخرى. ويحدث الصدام العالمين عندما تستميل المرأة حرَّفيًا مبتدئًا تجعل منه عبدًا للشهوة وتدفع به إلى السرقة والقتل، إلى أن ينتهي به وبها إلى حبل المشنقة.
