أخذت تميل الدراسات الحديثة المعنية بدراسة الإسلام المبكر في مرحلته التكوينية إلى أن مدى الكثير من ظواهر تشكله وملامحه المعتادة تعود إلى أعمق منذ ذلك التاريخ، ربما ترجع إلى قرنين أسبق من إنبلاجه الفعلي في المربع الاول من القرن السابع الميلادي وتحديداً عند الدويلات أو الممالك والإمارات الصغيرة المتناثرة التي حكمت في شبه الجزيرة العربية سواء في شمالها أو جنوبها والتي عرفت بنمط محدد من التكوين الإجتماعي والسياسي والديني، فقد حمل بعضها البوادر الأولى أو المقدمات التمهيدية لصورة الدولة وفكرتها في عصر النبوة.
ومن هذه الأهمية تبرز ربما دراسة مرحلة تاريخ العرب قبل الإسلام بوصفها الطبقة الأولى التي تموضعت عليها مراحل أو طبقات التاريخ الإسلامي، لكن مع تلك الضرورة العلمية الملحة، فإن تلك المرحلة تعاني مشاكل حقيقية وعميقة على مستوى المصادر والمناهج الواجب إقتفائها.
فالرواية العربية الإسلامية مشوشة وغير موثوقة لإعتبارات زمنية بين تواريخ تلك الممالك والإمارات ومراحل التدوين الإسلامي وتاريخه، فتبرز حيال ذلك توظيف المصادر الكلاسيكية (البيزنطية والسريانية) وهذا يدمجها ضمن الدراسات Late Antiquity أواخر العصور القديمة مما يتطلب مقدمات طويلة لإستكمال عملية توظيف مادتها العلمية ومعرفة سياقاتها ومحيطها التاريخي، وربما مملكة التي نشأت في وسط شبه الجزيرة العربية يمكن أن تكون أنموذج واقعي لتلك الأهمية والإشكالية في الوقت نفسه.
ويظهر أن مؤلف كتاب مملكة كندا المستشرق جونار أولندر تعطى مع الإشتراطات الأنفة فهو حشد بشكل مقارن مع الرواية العربية المصادر البيزنطية والسريانية وأدخلها في إطار مقارن لمتابعة تاريخ تلك المملكة، فيعد الكتاب من الدراسات التأسيسية في بابه.
