داب أبي حفص النسيابوري السمرقندي على جمع الحكايات المناسبة لمفهوم الحديث ولما تجمع لديه كماً هائلاً من هذه الأحاديث عمد إلى جمعها في هذا الكتاب الذي أبرز من خلاله الحكاية أنموذجاً عملياً مطبقاً قاصداً بذلك عوم الفائدة، إلا أن النسخة الأصلية عابها ضعف الخط واختلاطه وسهو الناسخ وهذا ما دفع المحقق خالد عبد الفتاح سليمان إلى تدوين ترجمة للمؤلف وقسمه إلى فقرات فجاءت كل فقرة متضمنة لحديث وحكاية علق عليها. ووقع في الكتاب بعض الأحاديث المنكرة فأشار إليها وأثبت ذلك بالهامش.
