لعل ولادة المؤلف في أسرة جمعت بين حضارة الشرق والغرب ما يبرر محاولته فهم الصور المجنوسة والمجنسنة التي يسبغها الخطاب الثقافي الأوروبي والأمريكي الشمالي على الآخر. وهو دراسة لصورة النساء الشرق أوسطيات في الخطاب الغربي.
وقد سعى المؤلف إلى صياغة إطار يستوعب الصور والمجازات المتناقضة التي استقصاها فكانت النتيجة مفهوم "تقانة المكان" التي يصف بها الأدوار التي يتحول من خلالها المكان المادي الحيادي إلى مكان ذي معنى اجتماعي. كما يعالج الوسائل التي تتحول بوساطتها الأمكنة إلى فضاءات مؤنسنة وتتخلى عن صفتها الفيزيائية لتكتب معاني تجاوز حقيقتها الجغرافية. فالقدس مثلاً أو مكة ليست مجرد بقاع على الخريطة بل إن لها معاني عميقة تتجاوز حقيقتها الجغرافية. والبقعة الجغرافية الواحدة تحمل معاني مختلفة عند أشخاص مختلفين. ويرى الكاتب أن الأدوات التي تعمل على تشريب الأمكنة بالمعاني هي الجنسنة ولكنها أداة غير مقصودة لبناء وعينا للعالم.
