الأسطورة قصة حقيقية عند بداية ظهورها. ثم تضاف إليها بعض التفاصيل فتبدو بعد ذلك خيالية فى نظر الأجيال التالية. من الممكن القول إذن أن ما يظهر خيالا بالنسبة لنا اليوم كان حقيقة فى نظر الجيل الذى نشأ فيه. فالأسطورة عند الإغريق –شأنها فى ذلك شأن الأسطورة عند الشعوب البدائية الأخرى – صورة من صور العقيدة أو الفكر. كلما تطور الشعب تطورت أساطيره. إذن فان دراسة الأساطير تكشف عن مراحل تطور اى شعب من الشعوب. فالأسطورة تعبر عن أفكار الشعوب تعبيرا صادقا. فى الجزء الأول دراسة لأساطير البشر . فى الجزء الثانى دراسة للآلهة الصغرى. أما الجزء الثالث فيتناول الآلهة الكبرى الاثنى عشر أو – كما يسميها الدارسون – الآلهة الاولومبية. بالإضافة إلى ذلك فان كل جزء من الأجزاء الثلاثة مزود بقائمة مراجع وكشاف وفهرست للصور.
