اكتسحت الجيوش الألمانية فرنسة مدمرة كل ما يقاومها، وجاء الماريشال "تبيان" بطل الحرب العالمية الأولى على رأس الدولة لينقذ ما تبقى منها... فوقع الهدنه مع المحتل. وأبى الجنرال "ديغول" القبول بالهزيمة وارتفع صوته من الجانب الآخر من المانش داعياً الفرنسيين إلى متابعة النضال لتحرير فرنسة، وقال: "خسرت فرنسة معركة ولم تخسر حرب". ولكنه كان يدرك أن التحرير تلزمه قوة عسكرية وهي عملياً بيد الماريشال بيتان، ومشلولة بموجب اتفاقية الهدنة.
وبدا الصراع بين الرجلين كان كل منهما يدعي الشرعية الفرنسية، وإذا كان صراعهما قد اقتصر في الغرب على الكلام فقد كان السلاح وسيلته في الشرق. والشرق بالنسبة لكليهما هو "سورية" ففيها تتمركز أكبر قوة عسركية خارج فرنسة كما أن سورية منذ القدم هي مفتاح السيطرة على الشرق بكامله. وكانت معركة سورية دامية، مريرة، اصطدم فيها أشقاء مزقت بينهم الهزيمة أو بالأحرى طريقة كل منهم للهزيمة. ووقف الشعب العربي السوري جانباً يتفرج، والألم يعصر قلبه، على دمار ونهب محاصيله لإطعام المحاربين رافضاً زج نفسه في قضية لا علاقة له بها محضراً نفسه لتحرير بلاده من سيطرة كلا الطرفين.
ولكن على الرغم من أن هذه البلاد كانت المسرح الأساسي لهذا الصراع فإن الكثيرين يجهلون خفايا تلك الحقبة، لذا فقد وجد اللواء جبرائيل بيطار بعض الفائدة في ترجمة هذا الكتاب، لعله يلقي بعض الأضواء على تلك الفترة دون تبني ما ورد فيه كحقائق مطلقة رغم كونه حافلاً بالوثائق التي تدعم آراء المؤلف.
