يعد الإمام الذهبي (ولد سنة 673ه وتوفي سنة 748ه) من الذين تصدوا للجرح والتعديل والتكلم في أحوال الرجال، وهو من مؤرخي الإسلام الحفاظ ومن كبار المحدثين، فطالما تكلم في الناس وعدّل وجرح، إلا أنّه أظهر انحيازاً لفئة أهل الحديث وشيئاً من الانتقاص للأشاعرة والحنفية، ممن يخالف مذهبه، فاتُهم بالمحاباة والتحيز والتعصب تجاه طوائف معينة فهل هو كذلك؟
يجيب المؤلف الأستاذ دلير أحمد حسين الجاف عن هذا السؤال في هذه الدراسة الشاملة المعنونة "الإمام الذهبي وآراؤه في التصوف"، فالتصوف الذي يرتضيه الإمام الذهبي هو الذي يكون مقيداً بالكتاب والسُنَّة، من غير إسراف في الجوع وترك المألوفات بحيث يضر بالجسم والعقل، ومن غير الخوض في ذكر الأحوال والمقامات كالفناء والبقاء التي لم يتكلم عنها السلف من الصحابة، بل ومن المتقدمين.
وبعد دراسة كتب الإمام الذهبي تبين للمؤلف أنّه لم يجرح أحداً من الصوفية لكونه صوفياً، بل انتقد وذمّ ما يخالف السُنَّة في الاعتقاد والعمل. وربما يرجع السبب أنّه اعتمد آراء من سبقه في الجرح والتعديل، كما وجده مع رأي الأكثرية أحياناً كما في قضية الحلاج، أو مع ما يراه صواباً وإن كانت الأكثرية على خلافه، كما في قضية ابن عربي، وأنّه أثنى على الغالبية من الصوفية، بألفاظ تدل على التعظيم والإجلال، مثل: (الولي، الإمام الرباني، الزاهد العابد...) وغيرها، ووصف الذهبي علماء الصوفية بما يدل على مراتبهم العلمية بأوصاف مثل: (الحافظ، العلامة، الحجة...). وحكم الذهبي على الصوفية بأن غالبهم لا اعتناء لهم بالرواية، ويعود هذا لغلبة العبادة والزهد عليهم. ويستخلص المؤلف من رأي الذهبي أنّه كان معتقداً بالتصوف إلا فيما يراه مخالفاً للسُنَّة، والمخالفة للسُنَّة إنما هي برأيه من خطأ بعض الجهلة من الصوفية، ولا أدل على ذلك من أن الإمام الذهبي نفسه لبس خرقة التصوف.
