امتازت حركة التطور المعماري للبيت السكني في حضارة بلاد الرافدين بالتفاعل بين المواد الإنشائية المتوفرة في البيئة الطبيعية للبلاد وبين المناخ السائد، حيث عاش الإنسان العراقي القديم في ظل ظروف مناخية قاسية تميزت بالإختلاف الكبير بدرجات الحرارة بين الصيف والشتاء وكذلك بين النهار والليل.
إن أهم ما يميز العمارة في بلاد الرافدين أنها اعتمدت على الطين بالدرجة الاساس في بنائها عبر العصور، إذ اعتُبر الطين أقدم مادة إنشائية في تاريخ العمارة العراقية القديمة والذي خضع إلى مبدأ التطور عبر الزمن بإستعمال الطوف والّلبن والأجر، فضلاً عن إستعمال الحجر بأنواعه وكذلك القصب والخشب مستخدماً المواد الرابطة في البناء (الطين والنورة والجص القير ومواد مقاربة للإسمنت).
وقد احتوى البيت العراقي القديم على المطبخ والحمّام والمرافق الصحية ونظام المجاري والمزاريب وكذلك إلى التدفئة والتهوية والإنارة، وخضع إلى تطورات معمارية وتقنية عديدة مندفعاً من الحاجة الواقعية اليومية والتي أدت إلى عمليات الإبتكار في توفير وسائل الراحة والترفيه التي تضمن حياة الإنسان وإستقراره وإستمرارية الحياة.
