نال الأديب الفذ "نجيب محفوظ" الكثير من اهتمام الباحثين والدراسين والمتفقين حوله والمختلفين معه ولكنه برغم هذا لا زالت هناك بعض النقاط والجوانب التى لم يتعرض لها أحد. فكان من هذه النقطة اختيار الدكتور (محمد علي سلامة) للشخصية الدينية في روايات هذا المبدع لتكون محور هذا الكتاب. وقد تابعها على ستة فصول كون منها كتابه وانقسمت فيها رحلة نجيب محفوظ إلى مراحل. فكانت المرحلة الأولى هي مرحلة الكل في واحد واختار فيها "عبث الأقدار" و"كفاح طيبة". أما التالية فكانت مرحلة التكون واختار فيها (القاهرة الجديدة)، (خان الخليلي)، (زقاق المدق). ثم مرحلة التبلور وقد بينها من خلال تناوله لرائعته (الثلاثية).. ليليها مرحلة النضج والرمز الذي يعبر عن الكل ويتعرض فيها للزواية الأكثر جدلًا "أولاد حارتنا" وتستمر المناقشة حولها حتى يدخل فيما أسماه مرحلة رد الفعل ويستكملها فيه، ليصل أخيرًا إلى الفصل السادس ليتحدث فيه عن العالم اللامرئي منهيًا رحلة داخل نجيب محفوظ ورواياته وأشخاصها على حد سواء.
