في هذا الكتاب الصغير الذي بالكاد تتجاوز صفحاته الخمسين صحفة من القطع الصغير يحدثنا الأستاذ"فؤاد شبل" عن دراسة التاريخ ولكن من وجهة نظر"أرنولد توبيني" الذى وضعها في كتابه المؤلف من عشرة مجلدات "دراسة للتاريخ" وهى الموسوعة التى تبتعد عن السرد التاريخي أما شابه ذلك، وإنما تدور في فلك التحليل التاريخي لما سماه المؤلف "المجتمعات".. ويقوم الاستاذ "فؤاد شبل" باستعراض جوانب هذه النظرية مبينا أهم آرائها، وموردا لبعض الأجزاء من النص الأصلي للكتاب.. وهو ما يمنحنا فرصة الإطلاع على جزء ولو يسير من الموسوعة، وكذلك التعميق فيها من خلال الشرح والتعليق الوارد في الكتاب الذي بين يدينا.
