أرنولد جوزف توينبي.
ولد في 14 أبريل 1889 في لندن وتوفي في 22 أكتوبر 1975.
فيلسوف ودبلوماسى، وهو من أشهر المؤرخين في القرن العشرين.ودرَسَ اليونانية واللاتينية في أكسفورد، وتقلَّب في عدَّة مناصب، منها: أستاذ الدراسات اليونانيَّة والبيزنطيَّة في جامعة لندن، ومدير دائرة الدراسات في وزارة الخارجية البريطاني،عضو المعهد الفرنسى،استاذ تذكارى للتاريخ الدولى فى جامعة لندن،والمدير السابق للدراسات فى المعهد الملكى للشئون العالمية.اهتم توينبي بالحضارة الهيلينية، ودرس الأدبين اللاتيني واليوناني في جامعة أكسفورد (1907-1911)، وأتقن اللغات اللاتينية واليونانية والفرنسية والألمانية والإيطالية واليونانية الحديثة وألم بالتركية والعربية.
عُين في جامعة لندن أستاذاً للدراسات البيزنطية والإغريقية (1919-1924)، ثم صار مديراً للمعهد الملكي للشؤون الدولية في لندن (1925-1946).
سافر حول العالم وحاضر في الكثير من الجامعات الأوربية والأمريكية.
استمد توينبي مصادره الفكرية من المدرسة، والقراءة المتصلة وكثرة الترحال، والتجربة والحياة الخصبة بالعمل.
أما مؤلفاته فكثيرة، أشهرها: «دراسة التاريخ» Study of History في 12 مجلداً (1934-1964)، و«الحضارة في الميزان»، و«الوحدة العربية آتية من النيل إلى النيجر»، و«تاريخ البشرية»، و«فلسطين جريمة ودفاع»، و«العالم والغرب».
أسس نظرية من أهم نظريات فلسفة التاريخ، تسمى «نظرية التحدي والاستجابة» Challenge and Response متخذاً المجتمع لدراسة التاريخ وليس الأمة، وقد حدد عدد الحضارات عبر التاريخ بثلاثين حضارة دون تحيز لواحدة أو نكران لأخرى، وعدّ إحدى وعشرين حضارة أتمت نموها، وخمس مجمدة، والأربع الأخيرة حضارات مجهضة لم يبق منها إلا سبع حضارات قائمة كمجتمعات حية هي: الأرثوذكسية المسيحية، الأرثوذكسية الروسية، الإسلامية، الهندوسية، الصينية، الكورية، اليابانية، الغربية.
