يحاول المؤلف في هذا البحث تلمس المقومات الفكرية والإجتماعية التي شكلت الإطار العام للشعر الجاهلي من خلال إستدعاء المكان وتوظيفه توظيفات عديدة اختلفت من شاعر لآخر وتباينت من قصيدة لأخرى لدى الشاعر الواحد مما ينفي عن الشعر القديم مظنه التقليد والتكرار وتعدد الأغراض وتباين العناصر وانفصال ما يسمى مقدمة عن بقية أجزاء القصيدة وهى في حقيقة أمرها مرتبطه بالموضوع العام ارتباطا شديدا .. إن حياة الشعراء الفكرية والثقافية لا تزال غامضة بالنسبة لنا لفقر مصادر المعرفة وكل ما لدينا من ذلك عام من الممكن أن يقال عن هذا الشاعر أو ذاك دون الوقوف على فكر كل شاعر وثقافته على حدة فتعامل الدارسون مع الفكرة وكأنها أمر متفق عليه لا يختلف من شاعر لآخر الأمر الذي جعل بعضهم يصف فكر الشاعر الجاهلي بالبساطة مرة وبالسذاجة أخرى.
